Road name will remember Sportsman

A POPULAR Waltham Abbey sports-man who died a year ago in a tragic works accident is to have a road named after him. Andrew King, who died on February 17, 1998, after the accident in Shenley, Hertfordshire, will have a road at the Town Mead sports park in Brooker Road, Waltham Abbey, in his name. Richard James, town clerk of Waltham Abbey Town Council, made the suggestion at the latest meeting of the development and tourism committee.

Andrew's parents Duncan and June, of Sudicamps Court, were delighted at the offer and Mr. King said: "It's brilliant, what with him being a sportsman. I'm very pleased, I'd like to thank the town council and I'm going to write them a letter. "He lived all his life in the town and he played football in the town. We think about him every day. "We just want to thank everybody for their support last year, especially his mates. His friends still come round and see us. Mrs. King added: "There's not a lot more we can do for him, it's just a way of keeping his memory alive, really. I can't believe it's happened most of the time."

Mr. James' suggestion was warmly welcomed by councillors and Labour group leader ClIr Barckley Sumner said: "A lot of young males in the town have played football with Andrew. I'm very happy about this." A service of remembrance was held in the Abbey Church in Church Street, Waltham Abbey, on Wednesday last week, which was attended by over 80 people and conducted by the Rev Rosemary Enever. Andrew had football trials for Tottenham Hotspur FC, West Ham FC and AFC Bournemouth and he played for Cheshunt FC, Waltham Abbey FC and Waltham Abbey-based Ninetields FC.
